Our Vision
First Church is a welcoming, vibrant congregation
seeking to deepen our faith and follow Jesus’ example in pursuing justice and caring for each other, the community, and God’s world.

James Campbell
Senior Minister
I’ve been on a long, wondrous, and circuitous journey. Along the way I’ve learned a great deal about everything I don’t know, but even more about the absolute persistence of Grace.
The son and grandson of evangelical preachers, I was originally ordained in the United Methodist Church before finding my way to the United Church of Christ. I have served parishes in Ohio, New Jersey, New York City, and now Connecticut.
During a break from ministry in the mid-1990s, I did some acting, had a couple of plays produced for the New York stage, and a few short stories published. I also met some wonderful people who loved me back to the church.
I am a graduate of Taylor University (BA), Ashland Theological Seminary (MDiv) and Drew University (DMin). My doctoral research explored Marian theology and devotion in a progressive Protestant context.
When I’m not working, I enjoy reading, traveling, gardening, taking photographs, exploring tag sales, and going on long walks. I am happily married to my best friend, Marcos Martins. And Max, the Boston Terrier, makes our home complete.

Joseph D’Eugenio
Director of Music Ministry
Johann Sebastian Bach, the great composer and father of sacred music, believed that music has the unique power to move the heart. Since becoming Music Director in 2003, I have seen firsthand how music transforms our congregation, enhancing comfort, inspiration, and spiritual connection. Our historic sanctuary provides a sacred space to present music of all styles, from timeless classics to contemporary compositions.
In my role as Director of Music, I am privileged to lead a diverse music program that reflects the many gifts and talents of those in our congregation. Our vibrant chancel choir sings anthems and leads our congregation in hymnody and song every Sunday morning. Music offered by vocal soloists and instrumentalists enhance services and provide additional musical leadership in our program. Our children sing together during Sunday school and often present music during special services throughout the program year as well.
With degrees from The Hartt School of Music and the Universities of Hartford and Connecticut, my life and work as a church musician has spanned more than three decades. As choir director, conductor, organist, pianist, and educator, I am dedicated to fostering musical growth and enriching our congregation’s spiritual life.

Todd Skrzyniarz
Director of Youth Ministry
I deeply believe in Jesus’ commandment to love thy neighbor. Service is a foundational piece of the youth ministry program here at the First Congregational Church. In addition to weekly gatherings, our high school and middle school students have regularly scheduled service opportunities as well as a week-long summer mission trip where they repair homes of low-income families. I have had the honor to serve as the Director of Youth Ministry here at my home church since 2009. As a youth growing up in our church I was deeply impacted by the youth ministry program, church mentors, and its leaders. I feel blessed to serve at the very church I grew up in. When I’m not at church I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young sons. I’m an avid Red Sox, Patriots, and UCONN basketball fan.

Church Administrator
Christine is the Church Administrator at the First Congregational Church. Prior to joining the church in December 2013, she worked at Choate Rosemary Hall in Admissions and assisting with the Icahn Scholars Program and then at Cheshire Academy as the Assistant to the Dean of Faculty. At the church, she is responsible for the day to day operations and has built great relationships with other staff, church and community members. “Providing a welcoming community to all, reminding us that God loves us just as we are is a great message and makes me proud to be part of this church”.
